  Her Captain and Crew:

Brian Heffernan has been enjoying racing and cruising in the Sea of Cortez for over 20 years. His first trip to Puerto Penasco was for a catamaran race sponsored by Fleet 66 of Phoenix. He remembers that he raced a Hobie 16 off the beach at Las Conchas (before all the houses were there) but for some reason, can't seem to remember the results, hmmmmm. He went on to win many state championships on Hobie Cats and Prindles, and finally, a National Championship in 1991. Brian and Heather met at the Cholla Challenge, a catamaran race sponsored by Multihull Fleet 42 of Phoenix, in Cholla Bay, Mexico in 1995. It didn't take long till they were racing and sailing together which eventually led to wedding bells in 1998. Brian then obtained his U.S. Coast Guard 100 ton Captain's License in Seattle, WA and the dream of starting a sailing charter business in Puerto Penasco, Sonora Mexico, was on it's way! Three year's later, after obtaining all the necessary permits, licenses and insurance needed to live and to operate a business in Mexico (no easy feat let us assure you), Pura Vida Sailing Adventures became a reality!!!!!

"Our Thanks Go Out To Brian & Heather For All The Fun They Provided Aboard The PURA VIDA".

The good ship Pura Vida and her captain and  crew have  decided, that after 4 successful years of providing sailing charters upon the  Sea of Cortez, to lower the sails, stow all the goods, and close up the ship.   Simply time for a change.

We have enjoyed all the good breezes, dolphins, sunsets, snorkel trips, whales, margaritas, and sunshine that Puerto Penasco has to offer. We were glad to be able share it all with  the many folks that sailed with us.

Muchas gracias to all the great people that we have met over the years that helped make Pura Vida Sailing Adventures a success, especially our clientele.  Boy, do we have some salty sea stories to tell...(you know who you are!)

        Smooth Sailing,

Captain Brian and Heather Heffernan

Sailiing is one of the finest gifts the sea can offer us here in Rocky Point. Can you imagine the feeling of sailing and coming across Finback Whales. But to top that imagine seeing a Whale Shark. This incredible creature, has been visiting the waters around Rocky Point for at least 8 years that I can speak of.

While on a trip returning to port from Bird Island 10 years ago, we spotted this majestic fish. Alphonso our boat Captain told us that he had seen it many times in years before.  These incredable fish are not an abundant species around Puerto Penasco.  They are well known for like the Whales in which they compair to in size, they too will swim along a migratory path following the swarms of the tiny planktons that they depend on as their primary food source. Isn't it ironic, that what is perhaps the biggest fish in the sea, feeds on one of the smallest creatures that it inhabits these waters with? So odds are this giant has been cruising these parts for quite some time now. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to see it in person. Then just as mysteriously as it appeared, it then vanished into the deep, only to return again the following season. Wouldn't it be nice if the next time it makes it's self seen here in Rocky Point, you are among one of the so few people in life that are given the chance to see a Whale Shark.
